My FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION

THIRTY PAINTINGS, framed, boxed and ready to go to my show in Corpus Christi, tomorrow! This has been a great experience, getting focused and finished up on time. I've learned a lot through the intense scrutiny of what I'll be putting before my viewers. The exhibition opens Friday, June 6th, with a reception from 1 to 4 pm. Hope I won't be there eating cheese and crackers all alone.

First Annual EN PLEIN AIR TEXAS Competition!

Happy to find out, today, that I have been invited as one of the 25 plein air painters, juried by Gay Faulkenberry, to participate in the First Annual En Plein Air Texas competition in San Angelo, TX. I am honored to be included in this group of talented plein air painters. What a great opportunity get to know them and to learn from them! These were my three submissions:

ISLAND STYLE

This is the studio version, done from my 9x12 plein air study (below), which I've included for comparison. The larger is on its way to my solo exhibit at the Art Center of Corpus Christi.  I've tried to simplify the value pattern and increase the focal area with a bit more detail.

PAINTING DEMONSTRATION RESULT

This was the first of my two demo paintings done at River's Edge Gallery in Kerrville, Saturday morning. Painting for the public can sometimes be a tight-wire act. This one happened to be a lot of fun from beginning to end.

DROP BY THE KERRVILLE FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS_MAY 25th & 26th

I WILL BE PAINTING ON-SITE in front of my Kerrville gallery (River's Edge Art Gallery at 832 Water Street) this weekend (25th and 26th) as part of THE KERRVILLE FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS.  The downtown streets will be lined with artist's booths, and lots of food and other fun activities.  Stop by, visit awhile, watch me make paintings before your very eyes!  And don't miss visiting a wonderful gallery space with beautiful paintings and hand crafted jewelry.  Hope to see you there!

DESIGN, ARRANGEMENT…COMPOSITION

Sitting before this scene, with everything in movement, I tried to imagine what I could turn it into.  This is where design begins, right?  Seems to me, design is theoretical by nature.  Considering the spectrum of what's possible.  What can be done to a subject and why.  I knew I would select from all that was before me, and arrange it so it felt right to me.   Arrangement is our prerogative to move things around to accomplish our design.  Composition involves our commitment to how we will express the subject.  Making the marks: line, shape, direction, size, hue, value, chroma under the influence of certain principles: dominance, contrast, repetition (with variation), gradation, harmony, unity and balance.  That's really all we have to work with to try and get at our feeling and vision, but the possibilities are infinite.

REVIEW, RE-THINK, REVISE AND LEARN!

Some of the preparation for my upcoming show at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, in June, has been to reconsider past work to hopefully get some of the paintings where I would like for people to see them.  Basically, that usually involves trying to design a more coherent composition, and work with the color to enhance the harmonies.  For the most part this process has been a fun and satisfying exercise.  I would recommend it to any plein air painter with a back-log of paintings, and sufficient elapsed time to allow you to see them anew.  You can't give your work this kind of intense scrutiny and remedial care without learning important lessons, making new discoveries and raising the level of your experimentation.

PAINTING AGAINST THE LIGHT

I was set-up and ready to paint, just waiting for the sun to rise over the ridge of the valley.  No point in starting something that was going to radically alter as soon as the sun appeared.  I was anticipating doing a subject that was far to the left of this view, but when the sun rose I found myself fascinated by the illumination of the landscape as I looked directly toward the direction of the sun.  A nice thing that happens in this particular type of lighting is that you get a lot of nice dark silhouette shapes that you can arrange, and the light from behind does a beautiful thing by tracing the silhouette outlines with illuminated edges.  Gorgeous effect, and FUN!

NOTAN AND GAMUTS_practical help for every painter…and FUN!

I just finished teaching a workshop in Marble Falls, Texas, for the Highland Arts Guild Gallery.  We covered how to use the Notan principle to improve composition and color.  I, also, spent some of the time to get into some instruction on how to use color gamuts to help insure beautiful color harmony.  It was a lot to cover, but a very talented and willing group, so we had a lot of fun and some great results.

Here are two of my paintings that illustrate my results using notan and gamut.  I enjoy teaching this because, no matter what level you're at, understanding the concepts will give an almost automatic elevation of painting results, and a great source of experimentation for the long run.
